Ho avuto l’opportunità, grazie all’organizzazione del Piccolo cinema America di Roma, di vedere un film che volevo vedere da tempo, ma che era davvero difficile da reperire in Italia nella versione in lingua originale: Crock of gold, scritto e diretto da Julien Temple, regista britannico che ricorderete per il documentario The great rock ‘n’ roll Swindle 1980 (basato sulla storia dei Rolling Stones). Candidato per numerosi importanti premi e vincitore di alcuni di essi, come ad esempio Cinema eyes honors adwards us nel 2008 e il Torino film festival nel 2014.
I had the opportunity, thanks to the organization of the Piccolo cinema America in Rome, to see a film that I had wanted to see for some time, but which was really difficult to find in Italy in the original language version: Crock of gold, written and directed by Julien Temple, British director who you will remember for the documentary The great rock ‘n’ roll Swindle 1980 (based on the story of the Rolling Stones). Nominated for numerous important awards and winner of some of them, such as Cinema eyes honors awards us in 2008 and the Turin film festival in 2014.

La narrazione avviene tramite esclusivi documenti originali e inediti provenienti dalla famiglia del cantante, tramite animazioni in stile cartoon spesso ironiche, belle da vedere ed esaustive, passando per dialoghi simil intervista con diversi interlocutori dalla moglie, Victoria Mary Clarke, ad amici storici come Johnny Depp e famigliari.
A truly accurate and well-narrated reconstruction of his career and life: from the psychological, emotional and personal background aspects, to the stages that have marked his musical career. The narration takes place through exclusive original and unpublished documents from the singer’s family, through cartoon-style animations that are often sarcastic way, beautiful idea i think, passing through interview-like dialogues with various interlocutors from his wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, to historical friends such as Johnny Depp and family members.
Il tutto risulta molto naturale e rilassato ed informale. Quindi restituisce un senso di verità. Penso che in un documentario l’argomento verità sia fondamentale. E qui c’è verità tutto il tempo senza nascondere o edulcorare nulla della entusiasmante e intensa vita dell’artista.
Everything is very natural and relaxed and informal. So it returns a sense of truth. I think that truth is fundamental in a documentary. And here there is truth all the time without hiding or sweetening anything of the exciting and intense life of the artist.
Numerosi i volti di Shane catturati sapientemente dal regista. Abbiamo potuto vedere Shane creativo e ribelle, Shane divertente, Shane riflessivo. Molte sfumature della stessa persona raccontano gran parte della carriera e della vita personale. La caratteristica e contagiosa risata di Shane è un tratto distintivo che vi accompagnerà tutto il tempo.
Numerous faces of Shane expertly captured by the director. We could see Shane creative and rebellious, Shane funny, Shane thoughtful. Many shades of the same person tell a lot about career and personal life. Shane’s characteristic and contagious laugh is a distinctive trait that will accompany you all the time.
Nonostante la proiezione sia stata accompagnata da un brusco temporale siamo rimasti tutti seduti a guardare il film e questo dice sicuramente qualcosa. Al termine della proiezione abbiamo avuto la possibilità di porre domande o curiosità al regista, che si è mostrato molto disponibile al dialogo e ha risposto a tutte le domande degli intervistatori, della stampa e del pubblico. Ho avuto anche modo di parlare con lui personalmente ed è stato davvero molto carino, umile e disponibile. Ho anche ottenuto un personale selfie (riprodotto in fondo all’articolo).
Although the screening was accompanied by a sudden thunderstorm we all stay seated and watched the film and that certainly says something. At the end of the screening we had the opportunity to ask questions or curiosities to the director, who was very open to dialogue and answered all the questions from the interviewers, the press and the public. I also had the opportunity to speak with him personally and he was really very nice, and humble person. I also got a personal selfie (reproduced at the bottom of the article).
Consiglio assolutamente la visione di questo film a chiunque abbia curiosità sul mondo della musica, su Shane MacGowan o che ami il genere documentaristico.
I absolutely recommend watching this film to anyone who has curiosity about the world of music, Shane MacGowan fans or who loves the documentary genre.
